Alufab Zimbabwe: Monthly Maintenance Guide

Protecting your investment at 202 Seke Road, Graniteside.

1. The “Harare Dust” Rule (Cleaning Tracks)

Dust and grit are the #1 enemies of sliding and stacker doors. In areas like Graniteside or near busy roads like Seke Road, dirt builds up quickly in the bottom tracks.

  • The Task: Once a month, use a vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle to suck out stones and sand from the door tracks.

  • Pro Tip: Use an old toothbrush to loosen stubborn dirt in the corners before vacuuming.

2. Lubrication: Choose “Dry” over “Wet”

Many people make the mistake of using grease or thick oil. In Zimbabwe, “wet” lubricants act like a magnet for dust, turning into a black grinding paste that destroys your rollers.

  • The Task: Use a Silicone-based spray or PTFE (Teflon) spray. These are “dry” lubricants that stay slippery without being sticky.

  • Where to Spray: Spray lightly on the rollers and the track itself. For hinged doors, spray a small amount into the hinge pivot points.

3. Frame Care: Mild is Best

Harare’s sun is intense. To keep your powder-coated finish (Charcoal, White, or Bronze) from fading or chalking:

  • The Task: Wipe down the aluminum frames with a soft cloth and mild soapy water (dish liquid works perfectly).

  • Avoid: Never use harsh chemicals, thinners, or abrasive scouring pads, as these will scratch the protective coating and lead to corrosion.

4. Hardware & Lock Maintenance

Locks can become “crunchy” due to fine dust entering the keyhole.

  • The Task: Spray a tiny amount of graphite powder or silicone spray onto your key and insert it into the lock a few times. This lubricates the internal pins without gumming them up.

5. Inspect the Weather Seals

Check the rubber gaskets and “mohair” wool piles around the edges of your doors.

  • The Task: Ensure they haven’t perished or pulled loose. Good seals are what keep the dust out of your house during the windy months!

When to Call the Professionals?

If your door is still heavy to lift or “grinds” after you have cleaned the tracks, your rollers may be worn out.
